Dr. Juan Acosta grew up in the Coachella Valley in Southern California and graduated from Coachella Valley High School. He graduated from the University of California Irvine in 1993 and attended medical school at the University of California Davis where he graduated in 1997.
Dr. Acosta completed a 5 year General Surgery Residency and was Chief Resident at the Martin Luther King Jr./Charles Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. He also did two years of intense basic science research at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles (CHLA) in preparation for his fellowship in Pediatric Surgery. His cellular research at CHLA focused on the role of fibroblast growth factors in lung development.
After completion of his general surgery residency in 2004, he did his subspecialty training for 2 years as the Pediatric Surgery Fellow at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He is the current Section Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Phoenix Childrens Hospital. Additionally, he is an Instructor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. His special interests include advanced laparoscopy, Surgical treatment of thyroid disorders, correction of chest wall deformities, and pediatric surgical oncology (cancer surgery).
Dr. Acosta is Board Certified in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow, American College of Surgeons and Fellow, American Academy of Pediatrics. His personal interests include spending time with family, baseball, softball, and basketball.
